Increasing global consumption and climate change put pressure on our current economic model. Today around 50% of costs in the manufacturing sector are related to raw materials, energy and water used in industrial processes. Optimising the use of resources is therefore one of the main challenges the manufacturing industry is facing today. But improving resource efficiency is not only crucial from an environmental point of view; it also proves highly profitable for the economic competitiveness of manufacturing industries.

The European Resource Efficiency Knowledge Centre (ERIK) is an initiative of the European Commission (DG Growth). The mission of ERIK is to support and strengthen implementation of resource efficiency by European SMEs. The overall objective is to establish a European platform of SME support providers - national contact points. For this purpose, a workshop will be organized where participants shall develop a comprehensive understanding of selected innovative methods, tools and best-practice examples for resource efficiency in manufacturing industries. The workshop further allows to identify individual learning arenas (capacity building) and to connect to other stakeholders with relevant expertise (networking).

This workshop will gather around 30 representatives of business support organisations, including established and prospective providers of resource efficiency advisory and consulting services from European countries and regions in the process of setting up resource efficiency services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Thanks to its experience in the sector of sustainable production and consumption, SwitchMed has been invited to share its best practices in resource efficiency in manufacturing industries with the audience. Marta Jubero, project manager at SwitchMed will be presenting the methodology developed by SCP/RAC in the context of SwitchMed programme for Green Business Model Development.
The workshop will take place in Berlin, 24th November; at the VDI Centre For Resource Efficiency located in Bertolt-Brecht-Platz in Berlin. For more information please check the website.
