Within the framework of the EU funded-SwitchMed Program, UNIDO has organized a match-making event for the benefit of professionals in the plastics sector in Tunisia. The event took place on 18-19 December 2018 at the Novotel Tunis hotel, and served as a forum for exchange between Tunisian and foreign organizations around the theme of the circular economy of plastic.
In late November 2018, together with its local partners in Lebanon, SCP/RAC has participated to The final capitalization Seminar of the Pilot Project entitled “Wine Innovation for Sustainable Economies" in order to discuss its outcomes. The seminar has been preceded by a visit to the beneficiary of the project in the Beqaa valley namely Château Kefraya, to have more insights about the in situ composting process piloted on its premises. The seminar has witnessed the participation of many actors and has been an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas on the circular economy in Lebanon, beyond the winery sector.
For the second year in a row, and as part of the promotion of green entrepreneurship in Morocco, the "Centre des Très Petites Entreprises Solidaires", with the support of the SwitchMed Program, organized the Elevator Pitch Day on November 22, 2018 at the premises of the Center. Several representatives of organizations and programs supporting entrepreneurship, financial institutions and government structures were invited to participate in this event and evaluate the 8 best initiatives presented by the selected green entrepreneurs during the year 2018. Granéco has been selected as the best green project in Morocco during the SwitchMed Elevator Pitch Day 2018 event
Our Switcher of the month in December 2018 is "Trash into Toys" an Egyptian based initiative that is boosting the creativity of kids helping them during workshop making their own toys and raise awareness about waste management.
The Egyptian Ministry of Environment and the Center for Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), with the support of SwitchMed, raises awarness about single use plastic bags and its negative impact on the environmental, health, economic and even social levels.
Morocco: Promoting responsible alternatives to guarantee the success of the ban on plastic bags and prevention of marine litter.
Concerned by the insane consumption of single-use plastic bags and following international commitments, the Moroccan government adopted a law to phase them out. After since, the administration has deployed intense efforts in controlling the internal production and imports, as well as providing support for adaptating concerned industries. However, an important pillar to achieve success may have been overlooked: the promotion of alternatives. This is the objective of two SwitchMed pilot projects which achievements can be found along these lines.
The SwitchMed Synergy Workshop on "towards Social Eco-Innovation in Egypt" was held On October 1st, 2018, in Cairo. SwitchMed discussing Access to Finance for Green Entrepreneurs in the MENA region in the AFED annual conference
Following the publication of the 2018 Annual report of Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED), about Access to Finance for Green Entrepreneurs in the MENA region, the AFED 11th annual conference held on 8-9 November 2018 in Beirut, presented and debated the report with multi-stakeholders participants. With its strong and successful experience in this topic, the SwitchMed programme and SCP/RAC held the Access to Finance for Green Entrepreneurs in the MENA region session, to share lessons learned and best practices with the audience. In addition, three Lebanese switchers gave their precious insights and opinions about their own experience.
