SwitchMed unlocks Palestinian students green business potential

An awarding ceremony has been held on a sunny and beautiful day, on the 27th of September 2018, at the Center for Continuing Education in Ramallah, to announce the winners of the 2018 Green Competition. This yearly competition have been organized by The B-HUB, the Green Incubator of the Birzeit University funded by the EU, following free training and mentoring of innovative ideas to improve resource efficiency of existing MSMEs and find solutions to environmental challenges in Palestine.

EU Representative Giacomo Miserocchi expressed that the EU supports and encourages "sustainable economic development" initiatives that fall within the framework of the basic principles of the European Common Strategy 2017-2020.
Through the Green Competition, we aspire to build a path to a sustainable future in Palestine, so it is essential to build environmentally conscious individuals and communities who are increasingly aware of local and global environmental challenges and who want to contribute to protecting the environment and preserving our natural resources. The representative of the European Union Mr Giacomo Miserocchi and Zaghloul Samhan, Director General of Policy and Planning at the EQA along with Ziad Mimi and Osama Mimi from the Birzeit University and CCE, greeted the winners in the presence of representatives from the local community, official institutions, donors, from the sector of environment and green leadership.
The winning teams were selected among 28 teams, based on the results of the idea pitching stage by a jury composed of environmental professionals from the Environment Quality Authority: Zaghloul Samhan, Imad Al-Baba, and Yaser Abu Shanab; Birzeit University: Dr. Omar Zimmo, George P Yerousis, Baher Dkeidek; the Palestinian Polytechnic University: Mr. Ali Ramadan; and Chairperson of the Center for Environment – Palestine Wijdan Al-Sharif.

The two first winner teams are Yousef Al Khatib and Aya Sarsour, whose project encourages solid waste collection from households and raises environmental awareness. The other winner is Shakir Nairat took second place for his idea on developing solar panels assembly lines, which reduce energy cost by 25 percent. These winners have been offered flight and accommodation in Barcelona in order to participate to the SwitchMed Connect 2018, where they will have the opportunity to meet many successful like-minded green entrepreneurs, policy and financial institutions, working on applications of productive, circular and sharing economies in the Mediterranean.
