A key meeting for the valorization of dates in Algeria

valorisation des dattes algériennes

At SwitchMed, we develop pilot projects to promote the implementation of policies and actions in the field, towards more circular economy models in the Mediterranean, in the priority sectors previously identified by the target countries.

As part of this pilot project in Algeria, Rima Dates has received direct support from the SwitchMed program. The pilot project "Rima Dates", coordinated by the SCP / RAC, aims to improve the valorization of by-products of Algerian common dates, in particular through the production of syrup, vinegar, and the extraction of oil from date kernels. An important component of the project was to improve the marketing strategy of Rima Dates to give a better visibility of its products on the market.

The project, which fits well into one of the three priorities (governance, energy transition and waste management) of the new Algerian National Action Plan for Sustainable Consumption and Production, is coming to an end. In this context a capitalization workshop will be organized on September 18, 2018 at AZ hotel Vieux Kouba, Algiers.

The workshop will bring together around 50 people including date producers, experts in the agri-food sector, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, public institutions, NGOs, students and teachers, as well as several representatives of cooperatives and associations involved with dates production.

The objective of this workshop is to identify the achievements of the Rima Dates experience, to perpetuate them, and to examine the potentialities of sharing and extending (up-scaling) the experience of valorizing dates to other regions and production clusters. Indeed this pilot experience has a strong local impact and leverage effect at many levels such as on macro and micro economic, societal and finally on environmental level.

A report will be published following the workshop and will include more details on all these results and capitalize on the good practices identified during the project, as well as the national workshop.
